The Heirtzler Fracture Zone (English for Heirtzler Fracture Zone ) is an undersea transform fault in the Southern Ocean north of the Ross Sea .

It was named on the suggestion of three scientists from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory . It is named after the American geophysicist James Ransom Heirtzler (* 1925), a pioneer in the study of ocean floor spreading . The naming of the rift valley was confirmed in March 1993 by the US Advisory Committee for Undersea Features (ACUF).
