Cheerfulness describes a cheerful , tidy, relaxed mood . In Middle High German , cheerfulness meant clarity . The antonym (opposite term) is melancholy .

In Buddhism , serenity is seen as an attribute of enlightenment . It is a result of the loosened standing above things from complete insight .

In the parliamentary stenography of Germany, Austria and other states, cheerfulness is recorded as an atmospheric expression of the audience.

The adjective cheerful is used in meteorology to describe a degree of cloudiness of 2/8.
