Brechen is located in the south-eastern part of the Limburg basin between Taunus and Westerwald . The low-forest loess hill country is crossed here from south-east to north-west by the Emsbach , which takes in the Wörsbach at Niederbruch and drains the area towards the Lahn . Together with the Idsteiner Basin to the south , this landscape is known under the popular name Goldener Grund , which refers to the favorable climate and fertile soils.

history

Nieder- and Oberbruch are first mentioned under the name Brachina ("on the mountain slope") in a deed of donation from the Lorsch Monastery of August 12th, 772. In the following years, the towns became the property of the St. Maximin Abbey in Trier. Over many centuries ownership changed back and forth between the Electorate of Trier and the Counts of Molsberg.

The places are important due to their location on the Cologne-Frankfurt long-distance trade road ( Via Publica ) as an outpost of the Kurtrier area towards Frankfurt. In the Middle Ages, Niederbruch temporarily had town rights and a town wall that is still partially preserved today.

The Berger Church , located in the municipality, has existed since Carolingian times and was the mother church of the region. It was the local church of the deserted mountains, which must have perished between 1354 and 1490. The first documentary mention took place in 910; Today's building parts can be dated back to around the turn of the millennium.

The district of Werschau was first mentioned in a document in 1235.

In 1802, the municipality became part of the Principality of Nassau-Weilburg in the Duchy of Nassau , which was annexed to Prussia with effect from October 1, 1866 .

From 1886 the three communities belonged to the Limburg district and from 1974 to the Limburg-Weilburg district.

The municipality of Brechen was created in the course of the regional reform in Hesse . First, Niederbruch and Werschau merged on December 31, 1971 to form the new municipality of Brechen. Oberbruch was added on July 1, 1974 in accordance with state law.
