Oberbruch is a district of the municipality of Brechen in the Limburg-Weilburg district in central Hesse .
Geographical location
Oberbruch is located in the valley of the Emsbach in the Goldener Grund . The federal highway 8 and the Main-Lahn-Bahn run through the place , on the southern edge of the elongated eastward stretch of the district the A3 and the high-speed line Cologne-Rhine / Main . The eastern tip of the district is largely covered by forest. In the west there are only small patches of forest and otherwise mainly agricultural land. The place itself is about 150 meters above sea level, while the terrain rises to 230 meters to the west and up to 275 meters to the east (Alteburg).
The Oberbruch district borders in the northwest on Niederbruch and then, clockwise, on Weyer , Münster , Eisenbach , Niederselters , Dauborn and Werschau .
history
The oldest Stone Age finds in the Oberbruch area can be assigned to the Michelsberg culture (5th and 4th millennium BC).
To the east of Oberbruch in the so-called “Great Forest” there is a group of around 60 barrows from the Hallstatt period . Right next to it are the remains of a rectangular rampart, obviously built for military purposes, called "Alteburg" . In the 19th and 20th centuries, due to its shape and relatively good preservation, it was assumed that it was an early modern fortification. Investigations from 1999 and some coins found during robbery excavations , however, suggest that the facility was built in Roman times. So far, however, there are no reliable findings.
In the first documentary mention of the place in a deed of donation to the Lorsch monastery from the year 772, there is talk of “Brachina”, with no distinction between Ober- and Niederbruch. The Fronhof Brichene mentioned in 910 was certainly in the area of today's Oberbrechens. At that time it was passed on to Konrad Kurzbold , who was to use the proceeds for his foundation in Limburg . From this point on, Oberbruch was part of the Limburg rule . In 1344 half of the town was pledged to Kurtrier , before it fell entirely to the then Archdiocese of Trier in 1420, like the entire Limburg rule .
By 1148 at the latest, the place had a church. In 1652 the church, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War , was rebuilt and dedicated to the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus . After a construction phase of more than 20 years, an extension of the church was completed in 1737. After another 30 years of preparation , the third extension began, according to the plans of the Frankfurt architects Hans (1872–1952) and Christoph Rummel (1881–1961), which was completed in the same year (1933).
In addition, the place has numerous chapels. These include the listed Mother of God Chapel , the Marienkapelle and the Antonius Chapel .
Territorial reform
On December 31, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent municipalities Niederbruch and Werschau were merged to form the new municipality of Brechen. Oberbruch was added on April 1, 1974 by virtue of state law.
