Helch reaction

In pharmacy, the Helch reaction is a qualitative detection method for organic nitrogen bases ( drugs such as pentetrazole , phenazone and pilocarpine ), which are readily soluble in water and organic solvents. With hydrogen peroxide , potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid , adducts with a blue-violet color are formed that are soluble in chloroform . Instead of chloroform, benzene can also be used as the organic phase .
