Surabaya Heroes Monument

The Surabaya Heroes Monument (Indonesian Tugu Pahlawan) is a 41 meter high monument in the old town of Surabaya . It is dedicated to those citizens of Surabaya who died in the famous Battle of Surabaya . The phallus-like column is reminiscent of the Monumen Nasional in Jakarta, but was erected before it.

The foundation stone was laid on November 10, 1951 by the then President Soekarno and the then Mayor of Surabayas, Doel Arnowo. Exactly one year later, on November 10, 1952, the monument was opened by Soekarno and the new mayor Moestadjab Soemowidigdo.

The museum opened on November 10th on the site of the monument, which provides information about the Battle of Surabaya and the national hero Bung Tomo.

Trivia

The monument adorns the coat of arms of the province of Jawa Timur , the city coat of arms of Surabaya and also the coat of arms of the local football club Persebaya .
