Persebaya (abbreviation of Perserikatan Sepakbola Surabaya, translated Football Association of Surabaya) is a football club from Surabaya . The club currently plays in the country's highest league, League 1 .

The Persebaya logo is adorned with a shark and a crocodile, the city's heraldic animals, the hero monument and a soccer ball. The background color is green, the color of Persebaya.

history

The association was founded in 1927 during the Dutch occupation as Soerabhaisasche Indonesische Voetbal Bond (SIVB), which, in contrast to the colonialist Sorabaiasche Voetbal Bond (SVB), which had been based in 1910, was an association for the locals. In 1943, during the Japanese occupation, the club changed its name to Persibaya. In 1959, the club finally changed its name to today's Persebaya, after the SVB had also been integrated into the club 9 years earlier and there was only one club in Surabaya.

This remained until the 2009/2010 season, in which the club split into two clubs due to arguments. The main club called itself in Persebaya in 1927 and won the 2015 legal battle over the Persebaya name and logo. A year later the second club moved to Jakarta and is now active there as Bhayangkhara FC .

Persebaya has been back in League 1 since 2018 .
