Helga Kress

Helga Kress (born September 21, 1939 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic philologist and university teacher.

Life

Helga Kress is the daughter of the German philologist Bruno Kress (1907–1997) and his wife Kristin Anna, née Thoroddsen (1904–1988).

She studied Icelandic and German at the University of Iceland and literature at the University of Bergen . From 1973 to 1979 she was a lecturer in Icelandic language and literature at the University of Bergen. From 1980 to 1991 she was Professor of Literature at the University of Iceland.

From 1992 to 1994 Helga Kress was President of the International Association for Scandinavian Studies (IASS) and chaired the Association's International Conference in Reykjavík in the summer of 1994.

She retired on October 1, 2010 and has been an honorary professor since then.

In addition to the publication of numerous articles and treatises on literature, Helga Kress researched in the field of gender studies and examined a. a. the depiction of women in the Icelandic sagas . She also worked as the editor of poetry anthologies and collections of short stories by Icelandic authors.
