Volcanism

Helgafell belongs to the Vestmannaeyjar volcanic system . This counts as the southernmost and youngest volcanic system of the same to the Eastern Volcanic Zone of Iceland (English technical term: EVZ = Eastern Volcanic Zone ). For the most part, it is a submarine volcanic system , of which around 15 islands protrude above the sea surface, the youngest of which is the island of Surtsey, which was only acquired from 1963 .

The Helgafell last erupted about 6,000 years ago.

Less than a kilometer northeast of this mountain is the Eldfell volcano (200 m), which was formed on January 23, 1973 during a series of eruptions of volcanic fissures.
