Helge Heidemeyer

Helge Heidemeyer (* 1963 in Remscheid ) is a German historian . In June 2019 he was appointed the new head of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Foundation . He thus succeeded Hubertus Knabe .

Studies and career

Heidemeyer studied Middle and Modern History, Political Science and Economics at the universities of Passau and Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1992.

From 2003 to 2005 he was the first scientific director to set up the Marienfelde emergency reception center memorial . From 2008 to 2019 he was head of the department for education and research in the Stasi records authority . Until 2012 he was a member of the Commission for the History of Parliamentarism and Political Parties .

Finding and profile

A selection committee had proposed Heidemeyer as the new director to the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial Foundation. The Board of Trustees decided unanimously for his appointment. Berlin's Senator for Culture, Klaus Lederer (left), commented on the vote that he was certain that the memorial would "succeed in developing the content and making the urgent cultural change". Federal Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) emphasized that Heidemeyer stands for an understanding of leadership that “meets the particularly high demands of a memorial institution that is committed to combating injustice and safeguarding human rights”.
