Tjungurrayi helicopter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helicopter Tjungurrayi (born July 1, 1947 in Nynmi , Western Australia ) is an Aboriginal artist who lives and works in Balgo , Western Australia.

Life

Helicopter lived nomadically in his youth , so the search for drinking water and bush food was of great importance to him. This theme is also reflected in his paintings. As a child, due to a serious illness, he was transported to the Balgo Aboriginal mission station in a helicopter belonging to a mining company . The Aborigines, who saw this aircraft for the first time, gave it this name.

In the mission station he was used for relief and transport work. The transport trips led through large parts of the Australian Kimberley . In the Balgo Hills mission station he met Lucy Napanangka Yukenbarri , whom he married and with whom he had six children. Yukenbarri passed away in 2003.

Helicopter is also a traditional healer and caretaker of Aboriginal traditions.

painting

In the early 90s, Helicopter painted with his wife. Painting couples together is quite common for the Balgo artists. He has been painting alone since 1994 and prefers a linear dot painting style . The topics he works on relate to the land of his father and mother, who lived in the Great Sand Desert and Gibson Desert area . Helicopter is a member of the Warlaryirti artist community.

He organized solo exhibitions from 1999 and 2003 together with his wife Yukenbarri. His work is in private and public collections, such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria
