Heliodorus (sculptor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heliodorus was a Greek sculptor .

According to Pliny the Elder , Heliodorus was the creator of a sculpture that stood in Porticus Octaviae in Rome depicting a wrestling match between Pan and Olympos . Today it is assumed that Pliny made a mistake here and was depicted instead of Olympos Daphnis . A marble copy of this work may still exist.

Around 100 BC A sculptor of the same name, as evidenced by inscriptions, was active in Rhodes ; this Heliodorus is probably identical to the one mentioned by Pliny. Signatures of a sculptor Plutarchus, who called himself the son of Heliodorus, date from the period between 82 and 74 BC. Chr.

It is unclear whether the arch-builder Heliodorus, also mentioned in Pliny, is identical with the sculptor Heliodorus.
