The company became known (as a synonym for the Neuer Markt ) when its share (after the passing of CEO Werner Koenig ) suffered a price loss of 35% in one day.

Until its insolvency in 2002, Helkon Media AG, listed in the MDAX, was active in the areas of film license trading , film production and film distribution , with a focus on TV rights trading (commercial television).

The historical Helkon Media AG should not be confused with Bijon Media AG, which was founded in Berlin in 2010 and which took on the name Helkon Media AG at the beginning of 2016 and has since been active in the same business areas as the historical company of the same name.

Business activities

The film licensing business area recorded the acquisition and licensing of film exploitation rights.

The film production division was supervised by Helkon Media Filmproduktion GmbH and other subsidiaries of Helkon Media AG.

The theatrical film distribution division placed mainstream films and art-house films in theaters. In addition, there was a cooperation with Buena Vista, which provided, among other things, that Buena Vista would bring its own arthouse films to cinemas in German-speaking countries via Helkon Media Filmverleih GmbH, and in return the Helkon Group would be given the opportunity to produce its own mainstream Films to use the Buena Vista theatrical film distribution.

history

The company was founded in 1991 by Werner Koenig and Martin Heldmann. The name "Helkon" was formed from the first three letters of the founder's surnames. The company was initially based in Munich.

In 1998 Endemol took a stake in Helkon. In 1999 the company went public in the Neuer Markt. On November 12, 2000, Werner Koenig had a fatal accident while visiting a filming location in the mountains of Verbier . In response to the cinema world crisis and the impending Kirch crisis in autumn 2001, the company had to initiate restructuring measures. In May 2002 the board member and co-founder Martin Heldmann left the company. On July 1, 2002, the share moved from the Neuer Markt to the Regulated Market . The reason given was cost savings. In August 2002, Helkon Media AG filed for insolvency proceedings . At that time the company had 134 employees. The group had a film library of more than 680 titles (films), which included both German and international mainstream and art-house films.

On December 31, 2003, the liquidator ceased operations and the company was liquidated. The listing on the stock exchange ended on November 11, 2009 on behalf of the insolvency administrator.

According to a notification from the Munich insolvency court , at the beginning of 2014 there was an insolvency estate to be distributed worth around € 1.1 million with accounts receivable amounting to around € 129.4 million. After all, about 0.85% of the unpaid bills could be settled. The dissolution of the company was completed in 2015.
