Hellisheiði (Fljótsdalshérað)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hellisheiði (also Hellisheiði eystri ) is a plateau in northeast Iceland. It is located in the municipality of Fljótsdalshérað , east of the plateau is the bay Héraðsflói .

The shortest connection between the small town of Vopnafjörður in the west and Egilsstaðir , the main town in the east , leads over the mountain pass (730 m) . With a gradient of 24%, this used to be one of the steepest streets. The road layout has since been changed, but there are still closures due to weather or winter conditions. There are considerations as to whether a 6.3 km tunnel is economical. The new line would be 15 km long and the tunnel portals would be 100 m and 140 m high.
