The Hellmig Hospital Kamen is part of the Westphalia Clinic , which also operates the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Dortmund , the Klinik am Park Lünen and the Knappschaftskrankenhaus Lütgendortmund . 349 employees care for more than 8,400 inpatients and more than 22,000 outpatients annually across five specialist clinics and seven centers as well as intensive care units and outpatient departments.

history

The origins of the Hellmig Hospital lie in this rented nursing ward on the north wall.

The Hellmig Hospital in Kamen was put into operation in 1884/1885 as a “memorial of pious charity” - according to the pastor Friedrich Pröbsting at the time. 15,000 marks donated by the shoemaker's widow Wilhelmine Hellmig provided the basis for inpatient health care in Kamen . However, the 15,000 marks would not have been enough to build a hospital. So first a care station was set up in a house rented for this purpose at the north wall 30. The first hospital ward in Kamen was completed here with initially six and later twelve beds shortly before the end of 1884. In the early years, nursing care was often the focus. Today, this has resulted in comprehensive, top-quality medical care, as evidenced by recognized certifications.

The Hellmig Hospital developed from a church-related hospital into a municipal service. Since 2013 the house has belonged to the Westphalia Clinic with other houses in Dortmund and Lünen and thus also to the Knappschaft Kliniken family. The cities of Kamen and Lünen are also shareholders.

In the early years, only two nurses worked at Hellmig Hospital, but today a multi-professional team of 361 employees works here. They care for around 8,000 inpatients and 16,000 outpatients annually in six specialist clinics and six centers plus intensive care unit and outpatient department. The Hellmig Hospital now has modern technical equipment for comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It works closely with general practitioners to provide comprehensive healthcare in the region.

In addition to basic medical care with a wide range of internal medicine, the Hellmig Hospital now specializes in angiology (vascular medicine), diabetology, oncology (cancer medicine), trauma and reconstructive surgery and visceral surgery. The central emergency department is an important component of the emergency care in the city and in the district and thus the contact point in various emergencies.

In recent years, extensive investments have been made in the location with the conversion of the internal function department, the installation of an angiography system in new rooms, the construction of a wound treatment room and completely redesigned wards on the 3rd level. New rooms have been created for a new radiology department, a new dialysis practice and rehabilitation facility, each of which is operated by cooperation partners. Further medical care offers are located in the Severinshaus, which is adjacent to the clinic.
