The Knappschaftskrankenhaus Dortmund in the Westphalia Clinic is an acute hospital in the Brackel district of Dortmund . The hospital has 14 specialist centers and 14 specialist clinics and 463 beds. There are also beds for newborns. The clinic is the academic teaching hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum .

history

Miners' hospitals originally served the medical care of miners . The plans to build a hospital in Dortmund for the miners of the former collieries go back to the time before the First World War. In 1913, the Knappschaftsverein decided to build a total of ten hospitals, each with a capacity of 300 beds, one of which was to be built in Dortmund. The First World War and the Second World War prevented the realization of the project. It was not until 1949 that the idea was taken up again. The Ruhrknappschaft (today Knappschaft (health insurance) ) decided to build a new hospital at the current location in Brackel. The first phase of construction was completed in early 1955 and the hospital was opened on July 11, 1958.
