history

The hospital in Brambauer 1907.

On September 26, 1907, the hospital named after the Emperor and Empress was inaugurated in the Krankenhausstrasse (later Hospitalstrasse, today Gustav-Sybrecht-Strasse) in the then independent municipality of Brambauer under the name Wilhelm-Augusta-Viktoria-Hospital and on October 15 the same Year opened. According to the 1907 accounts, the house with space for 30 beds and an operating room cost 98,730.01 marks in the end. In the opening year, as a survey report by a group of visitors around the then district doctor Hagemann noted, the house “did not differ from a spacious private home”.

An expansion of the building was a topic as early as 1930/31, but this failed due to the financial shortage of the city of Lünen, to which Brambauer has been part since 1928. However, an aseptic operating room and an X-ray room were created by converting hospital rooms. The hospital survived the Second World War unscathed. After the end of the war, however, it was no longer sufficient for contemporary requirements in terms of equipment and size. Therefore, the former administration building, which was damaged in the war, was to be rebuilt and rebuilt. On April 21, 1951, the hospital was put into operation in the new building on Brechteer Strasse. 750,000 DM had been spent on it. The attached south wing on Ferigestrasse initially only consisted of a basement and ground floor and was only increased in the following years. In addition to the surgical department, the hospital now also offered an obstetric department. A report, which was written before the start of operations, stated: "The Brambau hospital will not only be the most modern Luenen after its occupancy, but also from the closer and wider area."

The new house initially offered space for 76 beds and was fully occupied for the first time after just a few days. Extensions therefore remained a constant topic in the following decades. In 1953, 152 beds were available, but even after that there was further expansion and extension. Among other things, a medical center was built and the entrance area and facade were redesigned. Construction of the new east wing began in 2017.

From 1974 the hospital was no longer run as a city office, but as "Lünen-Brambauer GmbH" with the city of Lünen as the sole shareholder. Since April 2005 the hospital has had the new name “Klinik am Park Lünen” while maintaining the corporate form. In 2010 the Klinik am Park became part of the Klinikum Westfalen GmbH, which was run by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See and the city of Lünen. The Dortmund Knappschaftskrankenhaus was initially part of the Westfalen Clinic. In 2013 the GmbH merged with the Hellmig Hospital Kamen, in 2015 with the former Evangelical Hospital Lütgendortmund, now Knappschaftskrankenhaus Lütgendortmund. In addition to Knappschaft-Bahn-See and the city of Lünen, the shareholders of Klinikum Westfalen GmbH are now the city of Kamen and the Evangelical Foundation of Volmarstein .

In parallel to structural changes, new names and corporate structures, the medical offer was continuously expanded.
