Since 2002, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See has been operating under the Knappschaft brand as one of the providers of statutory health insurance . The health insurance is open nationwide.

history

The miners' union developed from the amalgamation of the Sankt Johannis Brotherhood of Miners at Rammelsberg near Goslar , which Hildesheim Bishop Johann I von Brakel guaranteed his protection in a document dated December 28, 1260, and is thus the oldest social insurance in the world. Until March 31, 2007, membership was reserved for those insured in the Miners 'Pension Insurance (mainly mining workers and their families, as well as Miners' workers). Since the 1930s, employees in the mining industry and employees with health insurance have been entitled to additional benefits. This also entailed a higher contribution rate than for manual workers. In return, the Knappschaft pays optional services for inpatient treatment (free choice of doctor and twin room).

Since April 2007 the health insurance has been open to all those with statutory health insurance. New members cannot acquire the additional benefit entitlement. For them, the benefits are the same as those of other statutory health insurances. Old members are still entitled to grandfathering protection for miners-specific special services. Since the opening, there is no longer any significant competitive advantage over other health insurance companies.

On January 1, 2008, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See took on the See-Krankenkasse and thus also the See-Pflegekasse.

In October 2019, the German Bundestag decided to transfer administrative projects from 16 federal authorities with eight IT systems to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung Knappschaft-Bahn-See - in addition to the statutory pension insurance for employees of the railway, shipping, mining and the mini-job center, the social security contributions marginally employed moves in. The Cottbus site takes on administrative tasks for the European Social Fund.

facts and figures

The Knappschaft has 110 offices nationwide. The Knappschaft's medical network comprises 1,500 resident doctors, eleven hospitals that are operated independently or as part of hospital companies, eleven rehabilitation clinics and their own social medical service . The health insurance of the Knappschaft has around 1.37 million members (2017) and around 167,100 people in need of care receive benefits from their long-term care insurance.

Contribution rates

Since January 1, 2009 the contribution rates have been standardized by the legislator. Since then, the financing of the additional benefits for old members has also changed. Financing through an additional contribution rate was replaced by a bonus system. Until December 31, 2014, the Knappschaft did not levy any additional contribution that was independent of the health insurance fund . In 2015, it raised an income-related additional contribution of 0.8 percent of the contributory income. From January 2016 to September 2018 this was 1.3 percent. Since October 2018, the additional contribution has been 1.1 percent.
