The Hellmut Bredereck Prize is awarded by the Hellmut Bredereck Foundation and is a German science prize . It is endowed with 2,000 euros (as of 2013). The prize is named after the German chemist Hellmut Bredereck (1904–1981) and was set up in 1995 by his widow at the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker . In 1999 the first prize was awarded.

Foundation, endowment

The Hellmut Bredereck Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation for the promotion of science and is managed as a special fund with a statutory purpose as part of a non-profit foundation administration of the Society of German Chemists. The foundation's sponsor and trustee is the Society of German Chemists.

With its award, the foundation would like to support young scientists who are active in Hellmut Bredereck's former fields of work. These are in the field of organic and bio- organic chemistry with a focus on carbohydrates as well as heterocycles , proteins and nucleotides . Funding takes place by awarding a certificate and a cash prize, which is usually awarded every two years. Funding can also take the form of scholarships or research grants. An advisory board made up of four scientists and one member of the family of the founder, Elisabeth Bredereck, decides on the winner and the type of award.

The advisory board includes (as of 2013) Karl Bredereck (Stuttgart), Christian Stark (Hamburg), Oliver Seitz (Berlin), Thisbe Lindhorst (Kiel) and Ulf Diederichsen (Göttingen).
