Jörg S. Hartig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Steffen Hartig (born December 12, 1974 ) is a German chemist (chemistry and synthetic biology of nucleic acids ).

From 1994 Hartig studied chemistry at the University of Bonn with a diploma in 2000 under Michael Famulok , from which he also received his doctorate in 2003 (Reporter ribozymes for detection of biomolecular interactions). Until 2005, he was a post-doctoral student at Stanford University with Eric T. Kool . From 2006 he was Lichtenberg Professor (a junior professorship donated by the Volkswagen Foundation) for the chemistry of biologically functional materials at the University of Konstanz , where he has been professor for biopolymer chemistry since 2011.

It synthesizes RNA in a modular way with combined functions, for example in the regulation of gene expression (riboswitch, RNA interference), as an aptamer (antibody-like binding function) and ribozyme . As part of synthetic biology, he also develops RNA that can be controlled and switched from the outside, e.g. by coupling small molecules (e.g. as aptamers). He is also investigating the use of four-stranded guanine-rich RNA (quadruplexes) for the regulation of biological processes.

In 2011 he received the Chemistry Prize of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen for groundbreaking and pioneering work on the chemical biology of nucleic acids and especially RNA (laudation). In 2015 he received an ERC Consolidator Grant.
