Jürgen Kretschmann (born April 16, 1959 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German economist and university president .

Growing up in Gelsenkirchen, he graduated from high school in 1978 at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium there . After studying economics at Aachen , Bochum and Dortmund , he was in 1990 in Goettingen to the Dr. rer. pole. PhD. In 1998 he completed his habilitation at RWTH Aachen University in the georesources and materials technology department, where he then worked as a lecturer . In 2005 he was awarded the title of associate professor by RWTH Aachen University .

From 1990 to 2001 Kretschmann worked in various positions at Ruhrkohle AG , most recently as a personal advisor to the deputy chairman of the board and labor director at RAG. In 2001 he moved to RAG BILDUNG GmbH as a member of the management board, and since 2006 he has been chairman of the management board of DMT Society for Teaching and Education and at the same time President of the Georg Agricola Technical University in Bochum.

Kretschmann is a member of numerous national and international specialist societies, currently (2018/19) President of the Society of Mining Professors - Societät der Bergbaukunde . He is also a member of the National Academy of Mining Sciences of Kazakhstan and a member of the Mining-Metallurgy Section of the International Academy of Ecology, Man and Nature Protection Science in Russia .
