The DMT Society for Teaching and Education mbH (DMT-LB), based in Bochum, is a joint organization of the German coal mining industry and acts as the supporting company for the German Mining Museum and for the Georg Agricola Technical University . It was founded in 1864 as the Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) and worked with the Steinkohlen-Bergbau-Verein (Stbv) and Bergbau Forschung GmbH under the umbrella of DeutscheMontanTechnologie e. V. (DMT) merged in 1990.

history

The Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK) was established in 1864 as part of a reform of Prussian mining law . Since the 18th century in the various Prussian areas (including in the county of Mark and the imperial monasteries Essen and Werden, which had belonged to Prussia since 1803 ), so-called mining office and “mining relief funds” had been set up. These were fed by mandatory contributions from private mining companies ( trades ) and were used to finance both the state mining offices and certain mining-related joint tasks such as B. road construction, geological measurements or the training of mountain officials and climbers .

Several of these precursor funds have been combined in the new WBK. It took over the sponsorship of the Bergschule Bochum founded in 1816 (today's THGA), later further mountain schools in Bergkamen , Duisburg , Essen and Recklinghausen were added. The WBK was also active in the field of application-oriented research. a. in the geomagnetic observation point in Bochum built in 1854 (later relocated to Vossnacken ). It contributed financially to the construction of the Bergmannsheil hospital in Bochum and to the expansion of the shipping canals that connect the Ruhr area with the North Sea ( West German canal network ). In the following decades, numerous laboratories, a test track for firedamp experiments in Dortmund and various test centers for the quality of hoist ropes and pit lamps were added. The WBK increasingly took on public expert and inspection tasks in the field of mine safety and occupational safety . The German Mining Museum in Bochum emerged from the scientific collections of the WBK in 1930 .

In the reconstruction boom after the Second World War, German hard coal mining experienced another brief boom before the coal crisis set in at the end of the 1950s and led to massive sales losses and colliery closings. In 1968 Ruhrkohle AG was founded as a rescue company for the troubled mining companies. At around the same time, considerations began to bring together the numerous technical and scientific joint institutions of the mining industry. After long negotiations, the Association of German Mining Technology for Raw Materials, Energy, Environment e. V. (DMT) was founded in which, in addition to the WBK, the Steinkohlen-Bergbau-Verein (Stbv), the Bergbau-Forschung GmbH in Essen and the Versuchsgrubengesellschaft mbH on the site of the former Tremonia colliery in Dortmund. Under the umbrella of this association, to which all German mining companies belonged at the time, two operating companies were founded:

  • the DMT Society for Research and Testing (DMT-FP) , which was integrated into the TÜV Nord Group in 2007 after several restructuring and has since been trading as DMT GmbH & Co. KG .
  • the DMT Society for Teaching and Education mbH (DMT-LB) . In addition to the DBM and the THGA, this also comprised four vocational colleges up to the end of 2000 , which, however, as well as the activities in the area of retraining and qualification through restructuring or transfer of operations, were transferred to RAG companies (RAG-Bildung Berufskolleg GmbH), which today also belong to TÜV North group belong.

organization

The sole shareholder of DMT-LB is Deutsche Montan Technologie e. V. (DMT), which is supported by the RAG Foundation as well as RAG AG and its subsidiaries.

DMT-LB employs around 300 people, including 40 professors from THGA. In 2017, the company's turnover was € 36.1 million, around 53% of which came from institutional grants.
