Hellweg (spelled in capital letters) is a hardware store and garden center retail chain based in Dortmund .

The first hardware store with around 500 m² sales area was founded in 1971 on Brackeler Hellweg in Brackel . The DIY chain named itself after the medieval Hellweg trading route, in the vicinity of which a large part of the branches are now located. In 2006, the distribution center for all Hellweg stores moved from Hamm-Uentrop to Bönen . Online sales started in 2011. In 2012 Hellweg took over BayWa Bau- & Gartenmärkte GmbH & Co. KG . In 2015 the new distribution center of the Hellweg Group was inaugurated in Hamm-Rhynern .

The family business employs around 4,700 people and achieved sales of € 758 million in 2018. The owner is Reinhold Semer. 97 Hellweg stores in Germany and Austria and 53 BayWa DIY superstores and garden centers in southern Germany are looked after and controlled from the Dortmund headquarters . The garden center Augsburg with seven locations in North Rhine-Westphalia also belongs to the group of companies .
