The Helmholtz Institute Mainz is a cooperation between Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt. It thus links the academic world of a university with the scientific possibilities of a renowned research and accelerator center.

Research focuses on antimatter reactions. Furthermore, the production of new, super-heavy elements is being pushed.

An important component of this is the FAIR accelerator complex, which is currently being built in Darmstadt: In a few years' time, the “Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research” will enable novel and globally unique experiments for nuclear and hadron physics.

The six research sections work closely together. In addition, cooperations are maintained with other research institutions in Germany and abroad.

The institute is significantly involved in the PRISMA + (Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter) cluster of excellence.

The HIM was founded in June 2009 as the first Helmholtz Institute ever.

The branch of the GSI-Helmholtzzentrum on the campus of the University of Mainz moved into a new research building with extensive equipment.

The current director is Kurt Aulenbacher.
