Aegidius Gutbier

Agidius Gutbier (born September 1, 1617 in Weißensee , † September 27, 1667 in Ufhoven ) was a German theologian , orientalist and high school teacher .

Life

Gutbier was the son of the mayor of Weißensee, but became an orphan at a young age . He first attended the school in Weißensee, then the monastery school Roßleben and finally the Latin school in Quedlinburg before he went to Riga as a private tutor . In 1645 he began studying at the University of Rostock . Years of study at the universities of Königsberg and Leyden followed . In Leyden, among others, Hiob Ludolf , Jacob Golius , Daniel Heinsius and Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn were students . He then went on to the University of Oxford and Paris .

Gutbier moved to Hamburg after many years of study, where he initially worked as a private tutor again. Then in 1652 he became professor of oriental languages ​​at the local academic high school . He refused calls to Helmstedt and Uppsala . For this he received the professorship for logic in 1660, which Joachim Jungius held until then .

1660 was Gutbier at the University of Giessen to Dr. theol. PhD . In order to be able to print his works to his satisfaction, he founded his own printing company in his house in Hamburg in 1664 , which existed until his death.

On the way to his home in Thuringia, he was suddenly surprised by death.
