The Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Technology

The Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Technology , also Helmholtz Institute Aachen (abbr .: HIA ), was founded in 1971 after a call for tenders from the Volkswagenwerk Foundation and located in Aachen .

founding

Sven Effert was the founding director in 1971 , followed by Günther Rau in 1975 . The main focus of the institute lay in the areas

  • Biomechanics
  • Ergonomics in Medicine
  • Cryobiology
  • Biophysical measurement technology and
  • Surgical therapy technology.

In 1994 the institute moved into a new building in the immediate vicinity of the Aachen University Hospital of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen .

Restructuring

In the run-up to Günther Rau's retirement, the institute was fundamentally restructured in 2002. Today the institute is jointly supported by different faculties of the University of Aachen and unites seven chairs. A director is in charge of each focus. Together they form the board of directors, whose spokespersons are also managing directors of the entire institute:

  • Faculty 1: Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences
  • Faculty 4: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The HIA is a component in the overall concept of the Medical Center (MTZ) established in Aachen. This also includes the neighboring technology center for medical technology of the Aachen Society for Innovation and Technology Transfer mbH (AGIT) and the medical faculty of the RWTH.

Since its inception, the HIA has acted as a bridge between the natural and engineering faculties and the medical disciplines at RWTH.
