Helmholtz Graduate School Environmental Health

The Helmholtz Graduate School Environmental Health (HELENA) is a central institution of the Helmholtz Center Munich , the Technical University of Munich and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich . The opening took place on November 1, 2010.

The aim is the interdisciplinary training of doctoral students at the interfaces between health and the environment ( environmental health ). Graduates acquire the doctoral degree Dr. rer. nat. at one of the two Munich universities.

Research projects

Doctoral students research the interaction of individual genetic predisposition, environmental factors and individual lifestyle habits and thus the development of common diseases such as diabetes mellitus and chronic lung diseases .

The research projects are divided into eight pillars:

  • Systems Biology, Imaging and Structural Biology
  • Ecosystems Biology
  • Epidemiology, Health Economics and Human Genetics

education

The graduate school offers courses that impart scientific skills as well as soft skills to prepare for the future profession. A thesis committee accompanies the doctoral students to clarify technical and non-technical questions.

The graduate school is headed by a management board that includes the speaker, representatives from universities, research and doctoral students. A graduate student office coordinates the program.
