from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Breuer (born June 4, 1944 in Niederberzdorf ; † January 20, 1963 in Boizenburg / Elbe ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Helmut Breuer was employed as a worker at the Elbe shipyard in Boizenburg . In January 1963 the Elbe , which formed the inner-German border there, was frozen over and various people managed to escape from the GDR in this way. Helmut Breuer and six work colleagues decided to flee as well. On the evening of January 19th, they went to the Elbe and separated into two groups. A group of four managed to escape. The other group was spotted by a guard around 9:15 p.m. Since they did not respond to the call and the warning shot, a guard opened fire and met Helmut Breuer. He was seriously injured and died in hospital a few hours later. His two companions were sentenced to prison terms.

A preliminary investigation into the shooter was dropped in the early 1990s because he had already passed away.
