Helmut Lemke (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Lemke (* 1953 in Cappel ) is a German sound artist and improvisation musician . He lives and works in Todmorden (Great Britain) and Bielefeld . He is currently active as part of the “Art for the Village” project in Sehlis (Taucha) .

Artistic career

His work on sound began with early experiments in improvised and scenic music. In April 1982 he and other musicians founded the artist group Heinrich Mucken , which performed site-specific multimedia events at home and abroad until it was dissolved (including Folkwangtage Essen 1987; Documenta 8 , Kassel 1987). The examination of the location of sound presentations and the work on expanded sound generators increasingly led to the transgression of traditional performance practice. Today, alongside concerts, there are also sound performances, sound installations and sound objects. Helmut Lemke worked in Europe, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Singapore.

Since 1995 he has lectured in Germany, France, Finland, Thailand and England. Since 1996 he has been teaching at art academies in England, where he helped establish the Phonic Art course at the Hull School of Art & Design in 1997 . He followed other teaching commitments in Germany, Thailand, Finland and France and Singapore.

From 2004 to 2007 he carried out a research assignment funded by the English AHRC (Arts Humanities Research Council), in which he studied the natural sounds of wider, open landscapes and the like. a. in Greenland, Iceland and Northern Finland from an artistic point of view.

In 1999 Helmut Lemke started a series of books with the title about hearing value . In performances and installations, he no longer added sounds to the place where he was working, but explored the possibilities of capturing the sounds of this environment and sharing what he found with an audience. The method of choice is the creation of drawings, as this enables the draftsman to react immediately to the situation to be drawn. The drawings show both the environment in which a sound was heard and representatives of the sounds themselves.

Since 2010 he has been developing a Masters degree in Sound Art at the University of Salford.
