Helmut Witte (chemist)

Helmut Witte (born July 18, 1909 in Helmstedt ; † June 26, 2008 in Darmstadt ) was a German chemist .

biography

Helmut Hermann Wolfgang Witte was born in 1909 as the son of Albert Witte and his wife Clara. Salge was born in Braunschweig. After graduating from high school, he studied first in Braunschweig and then at the University of Munich and from 1930 to 1933 in Göttingen. There he received his doctorate in 1934. Then he was a research assistant. In 1939 he completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen. From 1939 to 1943 he was head of the scientific laboratory at CHF Müller AG in Hamburg and Berlin. On April 1, 1943, he switched to the Institute for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry at the TH Darmstadt as an assistant. From 1948 to 1975 Helmut Witte was a professor at the TU Darmstadt . His areas of expertise were electron density distribution in crystals, hydrogen solubility in metals and alloys and heterogeneous catalysis.

From 1955 to 1957 he was dean of the chemistry department and from 1960 to 1962 rector of the TH Darmstadt. On November 25, 1960, he gave his inaugural address as Rector of the TU Darmstadt with the title The chemical bond and its significance for the properties of crystals.

Witte was the first chairman of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry from 1967 to 1968 .

Witte was married to Gisela Struve.
