Hemipenthes morio is a fly fromthe wool swimmer family (Bombyliidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 5 to 14 millimeters. Their body is dark in color and has dark scales and hairs. The wings are colored black on the basal part, the color is zigzag-shaped towards the transparent tip.

Similar species

Occurrence and way of life

The species is distributed from Western Europe and North Africa to the south of Siberia. Like most of the other members of the genus Hemipenthes , the larvae live hyperparasitic and develop on caterpillar flies (Tachinidae), which in turn develop in butterfly caterpillars. The larvae wear wreaths of thorns pointing backwards, and the pupae are also thorny.
