Hendrik Coenraad Hemker

Hendrik Coenraad Hemker , called Coen Hemker , often quoted as HC Hemker , (born July 21, 1934 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch doctor who mainly deals with blood coagulation and thrombosis .

Hemker studied medicine in Amsterdam with an MD degree in 1959, specializing in pediatrics and chemical pathology. In 1962 he received his PhD in biochemistry at EC Slater in Amsterdam. Afterwards he was head of a research group on hemostasis and thrombosis at the University of Leiden and from 1968 professor for internal medicine and for the biochemistry of heart and vascular diseases in Leiden. In 1972 he was also a part-time professor at the Free University of Brussels . From 1975 professor of biochemistry and head of the faculty of biochemistry at Maastricht University (whose then newly founded medical faculty he helped to build), which he remained until his retirement in 1999. From 1982 to 1985 he was Rector Magnificus at Maastricht University. Among other things, he was visiting professor at the Universities of Paris V and VI, at the College de France and the Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City (Affiliate Professor 1995 to 2005). After his retirement he headed a research group at the Cardiovascular Research Institute in Maastricht (CARIM) and is director of Synapse BV, a research and consultancy company at Maastricht University in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis.

He is the author and co-author of over 500 scientific publications (2011). He holds several patents.

In 1985 he received the Ernst Jung Prize , in 1974 the Boerhaave Medal in Leiden and in 1996 an honorary doctorate from the University of Xian in China. In 1987 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, 1990 the Academia Europaea , 1991 honorary member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Sciences and 2001 foreign member of the Academie Nationale de Medecine. In 2000 he became a knight of the Dutch Lions , Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1990 and Commander of the Order of the Palmes Academiques in 1987 .

1980 to 2002 he was editor of the magazine Haemostasis.
