Hendrik Weihs (* 1962 or 1963, Aichtal ) is a German space researcher .

education

Weihs is a graduate engineer .

Focus of work

He is the coordinator for return technologies at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and heads its SHEFEX research program , which is based on one of his basic ideas. The new developments would also be interesting for the construction of large space shuttles and hypersonic aircraft.

Fundamentally new idea of constructing the heat shield necessary for space ships to enter the atmosphere using flat heat protection elements that are cheaper to manufacture and assemble. In the past, space capsules were constructed with rounded heat shields. The connection of the flat heat protection tiles to a body suitable for hypersonic flight in the air layer with a good aerodynamic shape inevitably leads to sharp edges in the construction.

Hendrik Weihs explained: " The idea for the project came to me in a Munich beer garden when I was sitting with an aerodynamicist friend. In terms of flow technology, we have known for a long time that sharp edges are better than rounded shapes, which also have extremely high manufacturing requirements The only problem with sharp edges was that for a long time it was thought that they would not be able to control the high temperatures occurring there. With the SHEFEX project, we accepted this challenge and proved the opposite using an elaborate cooling technology. "

SHEFEX project management

As the project manager of SHEFEX, Weihs, who belongs to the Institute for Building Methods and Construction Research on the DLR campus in Stuttgart , brings together the work of seven DLR institutes and facilities.

Teaching

At the University of Stuttgart , Weihs offers the courses Constructing with Ceramics I and II at the Institute for Aircraft Construction .

Honors

As part of the celebration of its 60th anniversary, the state of Baden-Württemberg , in cooperation with the Südwestrundfunk broadcaster Südwestrundfunk, honored Hendrik Weihs for the idea for and the work on the SHEFEX project with the title “The day after tomorrow maker”.
