Henri Willy Pleket

Henri Willy Pleket , also Harry Willy Pleket or HW Pleket (born September 22, 1930 in Haarlemmermeer ) is a Dutch ancient historian and epigraphist .

Pleket studied classical studies at the University of Leiden , where he received his doctorate in ancient history in 1958. From 1960 to 1967 he was a research assistant at the University of Leiden, then until 1976 lecturer (lector) . In 1976 he became professor of ancient history as well as Greek and Latin epigraphy in Leiden; December 1993 he retired.

The focus of Pleket's research is epigraphy. From 1978 to 2003 he was editor of the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum . In addition, he published on ancient social and economic history as well as the history of the ancient Olympic Games . Pleket is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea .
