Heerup studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art . He took painting with Axel Jørgensen and Einar Nielsen and sculpture with Einar Utzon-Frank . Henry Heerup married Emilie Westh in 1933. Nanna Hertoft (* 1936) is his daughter. Heerup was buried in the Copenhagen Assistance Cemetery.

Henry Heerup created a narrative work. His stories always had their starting point in the obvious: in everyday life, love, sexuality, women and family. Heerup's trademark became the daily bike tour, from which he returned with material for his mythical creatures - from broken toys to tires and tin cans to half-size signs.

reception

“Heerup embodies the true,“ natural ”artist. It is as if he has long been at home there, where the others are just striving. As early as the early thirties, Heerup was creating original sculptures made of stone and wood and various assemblages of scrap and rubbish of all kinds in the “workshop” of his garden, in a hut on an overgrown site outside of Copenhagen guide the matter, which he also paints "when it demands it". Of his favorite stone, granite , Heerup says: "It is always in the stone itself. Granite is nature's hard-boiled egg." To free the figures in this "hard-boiled egg" or rather in every material that comes into his hands falls, slumber, that is Heerup's job.

Love, fertility and death appear again and again in his sculptures and paintings, clad in archetypal symbolism, reminding of the art of indigenous peoples. Regardless of the clear references to the melancholy of Scandinavian Expressionism, humor, which flashes up especially in his garbage sculptures, also plays an important role in Heerup's work.

Heerup himself cited Picasso's art as the most important source of inspiration . But he probably also knew reproductions of Dadaist and surrealist objects. Heerup always enjoys himself with self-composed melodies, which he writes down and illustrates in his songbook and which he likes to play. The shed in the middle of his enchanted art garden, in which he takes refuge in bad weather, is richly decorated with magical symbols. It is possible that Heerup is keeping evil spirits at bay that threaten concentration and creativity. "
