Assistance cemetery
The Assistenzfriedhof ( Danish Assistens Kirkegård ) is a park-like cemetery in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen . Over a period of 250 years it has developed into the most culturally and historically valuable cemetery in the Danish capital. Personalities of European standing are buried here. He is since 7 May 2014, listed building .
history
The cemetery was laid out in front of the northern city gate ( Nørreport ) in 1760 because the cemeteries within the fortress walls were largely occupied. Inner-city grave areas became unaffordable for the common people. The affected parishes met the increased demand with so-called assistance cemeteries (after the French word assistance, temporary help). In Denmark there are a dozen or so facilities under this name (see also the Odense Assistant Cemetery ). The conditions and time of origin are completely comparable with the development in Germany, in Berlin they can be seen in the cemeteries in front of the Hallesches Tor and in front of the Oranienburger Tor .
Well-to-do citizens have been buried in the Copenhagen assistance cemetery since the end of the 18th century. As early as 1800 it became a popular destination for a picnic . In 1813 the grave diggers were forbidden to sell schnapps to the day trippers. Where the park character of the complex predominates, sunbathers are not an unusual sight these days. Copenhagen's largest flea market takes place along the cemetery wall on Nørrebrogade every Saturday from May to October.
There is also a small Roman Catholic section and a Russian Orthodox section .

outlook
A redesign of the site is currently being planned. A third of the total area is to be converted into a regular city park by 2020. Otherwise, the cemetery operation is guaranteed at least until 2150. At the northern tip, a strip will fall victim to the expansion of the Copenhagen Metro : the “Nørrebro Runddel” station should be completed by 2018. The protection status 2014 preserves the previous character of the plant, u. a. a planned bike route was prevented.
