Henry Rangel Silva

Henry Rangel Silva (* 1961 ) is a Venezuelan military man and politician . In 2012 he was Venezuela's Defense Minister for a short time in the Hugo Chavez cabinet .

Life

Rangel Silva was the commander of the Strategic Command of the Venezuelan Armed Forces (Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana).

Rangel Silva was also the chief of the Venezuelan Political Police (DISIP).

He is said to have a relationship of trust with Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) . According to the Colombian magazine Semana , he has been a personal friend of Timoleón Jiménez , the former leader of the guerrilla organization FARC-EP, since March 2005 . The magazine assumes Rangel Silva was the liaison between the FARC and the Venezuelan government.

In 2008, the United States Department of the Treasury initiated the freeze on all of its accounts. He is said to have supported the FARC in drug trafficking. At the end of 2012, he had to relinquish his position as Minister of Defense to the then Commander of the Navy, Admiral Diego Molero Bellavia .
