Henry William Inwood
Henry William Inwood (* 1794 in London; † 1843 ) was an English architect, archaeologist, scholar and author.
Inwood is considered to be one of the main representatives of the Greek Revival - classicism in forms of classical Greek architecture, especially in the Anglo-Saxon countries. In 1818 and 1819 he traveled to Italy and Greece to study ancient architecture, as a result of which he published in 1827 The Erechtheion at Athens: Fragments of Athenian Architecture and a few remains in Attica, Megara, and Epirus . He designed and carried out several church building projects with his father, the architect William Inwood . Other churches were created in collaboration with EN Clifton.
In a short text, Of the Resources of Design in the Architecture of Greece, Egypt, and other Countries, obtained by the Studies of the Architects of those Countries, from Nature , published in 1834 , Inwood presented the idea that essential form details of Greek and Egyptian architecture and sculpture was transferred from natural forms to art, for example the fluting of Doric columns from bundles of reeds, certain crystalline rock forms or the surface of cockles.
Inwood died in a shipwreck on a trip to Spain.
