Hepatectomy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In surgery, hepatectomy (hepar = liver) refers to the complete surgical removal of the liver . It is performed as part of a liver transplant .

The term partial hepatectomy appears frequently in the literature , which means a partial removal of the liver ( liver resection ). However, this term is factually incorrect, since an ectomy is by definition a complete removal of an organ . The correct term for the operative partial removal of the liver is liver resection.
