Herbert Maxwell (Knight)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Herbert (de) Maxwell (* before 1365; † before October 20, 1420) was a Scottish knight and lord of Caerlaverock Castle .

Life

He was the son and heir of Sir Robert de Maxwell, of Caerlaverock, of the Clan Maxwell .

He was close to the Douglas family to whom he was related in a maternal line. Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas calls him his cousin. This very earl was taken prisoner in September 1402 and was to be released again in April 1406 through the mediation of the Scottish regent, the 1st Duke of Albany . Sir Herbert and others were sent to London in connection with this release to guarantee that the agreed ransom payments would be made as hostages . In March 1407 he was able to return to Scotland. After the 4th Earl of Douglas had acquired the feudal barony Annandale in 1409 , he made Sir Herbert hereditary steward of Annandale (Latin senescallus Annandie ) with a document dated February 8, 1410 . In the same document, Sir Herbert is referred to for the first time as Lord of Caerlaverock, which shows that when his father died in the meantime, he inherited his father's lands, including this castle. In November 1413, Sir Herbert was again held hostage to secure the ransom payments for the 4th Earl of Douglas in London.

By 1385 he had married Katherine Stewart, daughter of John Stewart of Dalswinton. He had three children with her:

  • Jane Maxwell, ⚭ William Douglas, of Drumlanrig († 1458)
  • Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell († around 1454), ⚭ I) NN Herries, ⚭ II) Catherine Seton
  • Aymer de Maxwell († 1456), ⚭ Janet of Kirkconnel

He died in 1420, at the latest in October, when his son Herbert was enfeoffed with his estate in "Meikle Dripps" with a document dated October 20 as his inheritance. His son Herbert, who also succeeded him as Steward of Annandale, was to be promoted to peer class as Lord Maxwell in 1445 .
