Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell

Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell (* before November 1413 , † before February 14, 1454 ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son and heir of Herbert Maxwell of Carlaverock , Steward of Annandale (* before 1365, † around 1420), from his marriage to Katherine, a daughter of John Stewart of Dalswinton .

As part of the celebrations for the coronation of King James I on May 21 (or 2), 1424, he was knighted . In March 1430 he was listed as a member of parliament; However, he was not yet appointed Lord, as a document dated January 8, 1441 shows, which he signed with "Herbert de Maxwel, dominus de Carlaverock, miles" . On July 3, 1445, he received the official appointment of King James II.

He was one of the Scottish commanders in the Battle of Sark in October 1448, after which he was still an admiral, "Warden of the Marches" and in the years 1450 to 1453 as a "conservator of various truces with England" ("Keeper of Peace") , probably some kind of senior parliamentarian).

He was married twice. From her first marriage to a daughter of Herbert Herries of Terregles there were three sons; Robert (later 2nd Lord), Edward and Gavin, and a daughter; Katherine. In his second marriage he married Katherine, a daughter of William Seton; with her he had five sons and two daughters.
