history

The War of the Palatinate Succession did not stop at Heidelberg either; almost all the buildings were destroyed and the residents were driven out, murdered or died in the battles. Since Heidelberg was occupied by French troops, the seat of government was moved to Düsseldorf . After the end of the war, the Elector Johann Wilhelm sent plans to Heidelberg that showed how he envisaged the reconstruction of the destroyed city.

Since Heidelberg only had around 150 inhabitants towards the end of the war, it was initially not possible to implement the elector's plans. Nevertheless, it was decided to make a start: In 1703 the city commissioned the Heidelberg sculptor Johann Martin Laub to build a fountain in front of the town hall, in which a Hercules figure on a column, created by the sculptor Heinrich Charrasky , was placed in the middle . With this act the aim was to convey gratitude to the citizens of Heidelberg on the one hand and to encourage them to rebuild the city on the other.

The fountain was completed in 1705/1706. It is still at its original location on the market square in Heidelberg.
