Hermann Becker

Hermann Becker (born April 25, 1919 in Lübeck , † November 15, 1981 in Meppen ) was a German sculptor and painter.

Life

Hermann Becker was born in Lübeck as the third child of the Becker family of musicians. After completing primary school in Berlin-Lichterfelde, he went to school at the grammar school in Berlin-Lankwitz and at the Luisengymnasium Moabit. In 1932 Hermann Becker was sent to Jerusalem through his godmother, Therese Neumann. In the Dormition AbbeyIn Jerusalem, he graduated from the lower secondary to upper primary classes. Between 1932 and 1936, Hermann Becker completed eight semesters of Latin, Greek, Arabic and English. In 1936 he returned to Germany. After a year of preparation in a private school in Berlin, Becker tried to do the German Abitur at a state high school, but was not admitted for political reasons (father and sister were arrested). Certificates, which were also written in Hebrew because of the national regulations, precluded proper studies at a German art college.

Becker studied first as a private student with Ralph Weiß at the Berlin School of Applied Arts, then at the Art School with Tanck and sculpture at Koch Zeuthen. A denunciation had the consequence that he was expelled from school in Professor Zeitner's goldsmith class in 1938. Another attempt to be admitted as an intern to study at the art college through the private Debschnitz School in Munich was successful. Becker became a private student of the sculptor ML Wilkens and was supported by the church painter Gebhard Fuge. After Becker was called up for military service after two semesters, he succeeded in working for the first time as a regular student at the Berlin Art School without submitting any certificates. Here he again belonged to Professor Tanck's sculpture and anatomy class. But then he had to go to war.

In 1947 Becker was released from English captivity and returned to Germany. Because of his marriage he moved to Meppen in the Emsland. Here he worked and worked until his death on November 25, 1981.
