Neusüss at the GhK Kassel in 1981. This was followed by teaching assignments and lectures at various international universities. Stamm received an appointment to the DFA in 1990. “The lost reputation - images from the filing of oblivion.

Hermann Stamm, born in 1953, has made a name for himself with photo series, books and book objects. They have titles such as: "The Forbidden Death", "The Teaching", "The Forbidden Suffering", "Pictures from the Registry of Reflection" or "The lost reputation". Although he uses photography for almost all of his work and has received various prizes and awards from relevant committees and professional associations, he does not see himself as a photographer. The compilation of series as well as the text that creates contextualization are inseparable from Hermann Stamm's artistic approach. The individual sheets, as vividly as they speak to the senses for themselves, are still incomplete in themselves. Only when they are in the right context does a striking effect arise. The forcefulness of his photos results precisely from the conflict between their aesthetics, their deeper consideration, inviting attention to detail with supposedly inconspicuous content and the semantic charge through the knowledge contributed by the viewer.

In doing so, the artist makes use of specific, contemporary means, as the forensic scientists - Christian Boltanski, for example - introduced them to art at the same time. Documentation and archive, from which past life is also to be reconstructed through a mental act, provide the motives for his approach, as the objects collected there are not kept for their own sake, but because they are carriers of symbols, for what is absent, that through them can be conjured up again. Hermann Stamm uses the closeness to death, oblivion and temporality that is inevitable in the process of photography, since a photo always preserves the past and thus invites comparison with the present, to create something like a contemporary memento mori.

The ars humilis, continued by Hermann Stamm, the "modest art" known in religious contexts, which tried to give us thoughts of death, decay and transience with its "poveren" material, leads us back to the original beginnings, namely to the fact that all regions and art are founded in the knowledge of one's own death. "

“To the self-portraits by Hermann Stamm.

Hermann Stamm has been photographing himself again and again since 1979. A collection in the thousands has been created. We see the photographer in front of the Berlin Wall, the World Trade Center in New York, the Napoleon bust in Amiens and on the Gulf of Naples. The time is reflected twice in the pictures, on his face and the background. The photographer is the paradox, but the consistent guarantor for a different view of the things behind him. Stamm does away with the old idea that in photography the matter itself could be expressed. It doubles the subjectivity of the photographer, who is not only present in the composition of the picture, but who cannot be overlooked in the picture either. The images from "The Registry of Reflection" by Hermann Stamm make this operation of the photographic image acquisition clear even before digitization. Conversely, one recognizes that the photographer is also in the picture where he does not depict himself. Stamm's face tends to disappear in the eye of the beholder. The background, it seems, wants to slide past the head and into the foreground. Pretending to be three-dimensional, the picture remains flat and its moments are equally important. These pictures are puzzles and parables at the same time. Each one tells a story. As retrospectives, which now cover a period of over 35 years, they are designed as a life project that knows beyond the individual life. "
