During the rule of the Ottoman Empire over Greece, Greek merchants and intellectuals left their homeland, for example to do business in Vienna or to study at Italian universities. The Hermes ho logios was the second Greek newspaper in Vienna after the Ephemeris founded in 1784 . It first appeared bimonthly on January 1, 1811; initially the designation was Ἑρμῆς ὁ Λόγιος, ἥ Φιλολογικαί Ἀγγελίαι (Hermes the Scholar - Linguistic Reports), the addition was later omitted, but philology remained a focus. One of the authors of the newspaper was Adamantios Korais , he criticized Orthodoxy and concentrated his work more and more on the development of the Katharevousa , an antiquated form of the Greek language. When Anthimos Gazis moved from Vienna in 1813, he handed over the editing to Theoklitos Farmakidis, who, in accordance with the wishes of the authors, gave the newspaper a more linguistic interpretation. The result was a significant drop in readers. Only when Anthimos Gazis resumed his previous function in 1815 and returned to the old conception did the edition recover. Subscribers included well-known Greek figures of the diaspora, such as Scarlat Callimachi and Michael Soutzos.

Although political issues were not the subject of the newspaper, it can be assumed that the authors supported Greece's independence from the Ottoman Empire. Politics was only reported in the form of translations of articles in the official Wiener Zeitung . Metternich tried to prevent Greece from becoming independent. When an article critical of the church was published in the year of the beginning of the Greek Revolution (1821), the Viennese authorities took this as an opportunity to close the newspaper.
