The brochure Herodes I, called the Great by Franz Eugen Schlachter , published in 1897 by Verlag der “Brosamen” , Biel , is a representation of part of the contemporary history of the New Testament. Schlachter retold the life of Herod I , called the Great. The source was the Greek text of Flavius Josephus ' works History of the Jewish War and Jewish Antiquities , from which Schlachter translated directly. Herod is the child murderer from the Gospel of Matthew ( Mt 2,16-18  SLT ), who tried to murder the Messiah and thus the King of Israel as a child.

It depicts the brutality of antiquity, parts of the history of a ruling dynasty, or a piece of contemporary New Testament history. The little book shows various ancient pictures such as a picture of ancient Jerusalem, a picture of the Roman emperor Octavianus etc.

Schlachter created a short biography or study of a contemporary person from the biblical context.
