description

The monumentally designed burial place of the Heron family is located on the western edge of the cemetery of Monigaff Parish Church. The classicistic red sandstone structure dates from 1761. Two pairs of Corinthian columns carry an ornate frieze . A triangular gable with an urn sits on decorative consoles. The columns are flanked by a commemorative plaque on massive consoles and a coat of arms framed by Kymatien . A wall with a stone balustrade at the end surrounds the tomb. A wrought iron gate hung on rusticated stone posts delimits the site on the east side.

Since 2008 the monument has been on the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. The monument is increasingly being damaged by vegetation in particular, so that two elements are no longer considered stable. Most recently in 2014, the condition of the Heron Monument was classified as poor, but with a moderate risk of deterioration.
