The large lunar crater Hertzsprung is located on the equator on the back of the moon , east of its center. It is one of the largest ring structures on the moon.
- Selenographic coordinates +11 to −9 °, center of the crater 128 ° West
- Diameter about 536 km
- named after the Danish astronomer Ejnar Hertzsprung (1873–1967).
The large crater has the shape of a huge double ring, the inner ring already being 250 km in diameter, and has a strongly negative gravity anomaly in the shape of a circle (negative Mascon ), which changes all around to positive.
Inside the formation are numerous smaller craters, the largest of which is 50 km in diameter. The inner ring also has two short rows of craters , the southern outer ring two long craters , each with over 10 individual craters , which may be secondary craters of a larger impact.
Exactly the same shape of the double ring can also be found in the giant craters Apollo and Korolev to the southwest . Likewise, the three large structures on the back of the moon have similarities in the gravitational image (weaker also to the Mare Orientale ), which indicates related origins.
