Apollo is one of the largest lunar craters on Earth's moon. The formation lies in the southern hemisphere on the far side of the moon .

The large crater has the shape of a huge double ring, with the inner ring about 200 km in diameter, and has a clearly negative gravity anomaly (negative Mascon ).

Inside the formation there are several smaller craters, some of which have been named after crew members who died on space missions (see also Apollo 1 , Challenger and Columbia ).

Exactly the same shape of the double ring can also be found in the giant craters Korolev and Hertzsprung to the north . Likewise, the three large structures on the back of the moon have similarities in the gravitational image (weaker also to the Mare Orientale ), which indicates related origins.
