Appearance and wearing style

1. Form

The badge of honor is made of bronze , has the shape of a shield and is almost oval. Its dimensions are approximately 30 mm wide and 40 mm high. The obverse shows a rising sun in the middle with the corresponding rays of the sun with a blue enameled sky in front of which a hammer and compass, the symbols of the republic, can be seen. Above this, on a shield-shaped blue (but also in bronze) enamelled background, the two-line inscription: OUTSTANDING / JUGENDBRIGADE can be read. This inscription shield is surrounded by a semicircular laurel wreath, which then merges into a writing ring that encloses the rest of the badge. The inscription: DER DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHEN REPUBLIK can be read in this ring of letters . The lapel , on the other hand, is smooth and shows a horizontally soldered needle with a counter-hook. The badge of honor was worn on the upper right, not left, side of the chest of the recipient. There was also an embroidered variant that was worn on the work suit.

2. shape

In 1958 the decoration underwent a fundamental change in its appearance. From this point on, the badge of honor was awarded in the form of a silver medal with a diameter of 30 mm, on the obverse of which a laurel wreath can be seen with a pentagonal star placed in the middle, which has light blue enameled tips. This star in turn partially covers the laurel wreath and shows in its center a medallion with a diameter of 21 mm whose writing ring shows the inscription: EXCELLENT YOUTH BRIAGDE . The middle of the medallion shows a German flag in front of a rising sun with rays. It was not until 1960 that the German flag was replaced by a GDR flag with a national coat of arms. The reverse of the medal, however, is blank. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a clasp with a blue ribbon measuring 24 × 11 mm. A vertical central stripe 2.5 mm wide has been woven into the ribbon itself, showing the color sequence black-red-gold.
